About Me

Becoming an end-of-life doula was not something I had planned. I studied Sociology in Switzerland, where I’m from. Since coming to NYC almost 30 years ago, I have worked as a researcher in Marketing and Technology. Things changed after I experienced personal loss.

Becoming a Doula

Marlene Mrakovcic

My mother’s death ten years ago was sudden. She always seemed strong and healthy, but then one day, she was rushed to the ER with a major stroke. Our family was in shock and didn't know what to do or how to speak to each other, let alone know how to help my mother in her final days. I remember sitting in the hospital corridor wishing I could talk to someone, but I didn’t want to burden my family or friends.

My dad’s death was different. He received 24/7 care at home from wonderful aides who also supported me. They answered my questions, explained everything that was happening, kept me calm and even cooked for me. This filled me with gratitude and led me to my first end-of-life doula course in 2020, provided by INELDA (International End-of-Life Doulas Association).

Since then, I’ve had additional training and I volunteer for two hospices in NYC. I see my role as complementary to what doctors, nurses, aides, therapists, and chaplains do—providing practical and human support when professionals need to move on.
